Laboratory of Experimental Phonetics

Description: The Laboratory of Experimental Phonetics of the Department of Humanities at the University of Pavia serves as a teaching and research hub, providing support and reference resources for students and faculty engaged in the study of the spoken dimension of language.

Research Areas: The Laboratory hosts research activities including the collection, processing, transcription, and compilation of linguistic resources; experimental-phonetic studies of spoken language; statistical and computational modeling of speech; and phonological analysis.

Equipment: Empirical and experimental studies of speech are supported by the Laboratory’s professional instrumentation, software, and techniques (e.g., Ultrasound Tongue Imaging – UTI, automatic extraction of acoustic features, forced alignment, etc.). The Laboratory is also equipped with an anechoic chamber—a space specifically designed to minimize sound reflection—suitable for recording audio materials for phonetic-experimental research.

Mission: The Laboratory of Experimental Phonetics organizes training events for students enrolled in Phonetics and Phonology courses and for doctoral candidates within the Department, as well as outreach events open to the entire University of Pavia community.

Address: Palazzo San Tommaso, Piazza del Lino, 2, 27100 Pavia PV
