The Pavia Research Centre in Environmental Humanities stems from the conviction that the humanities should play a key role in present-day debates on climate emergency, on the relationship between environmental circumstances and social justice, and ultimately on human responsibility towards nature. The group was established in the academic year 2023/24 when colleagues from the Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici of the University of Pavia came together to work collectively and in a multidisciplinary manner, connecting their individual research approaches to topics related to the environment, nature and ecology. The methodology of the group aims at a productive, open dialogue between different disciplines within the humanities.
One of the first goals of the research group is to create a lexicon of key terms for the Environmental Humanities, providing an essential tool for linguistic, conceptual and historical orientation in a recent field of studies, which is growing exponentially. To achieve this, during its first year of activity the group has organised seminars and workshops in collaboration with the Collegio Borromeo in Pavia, networking with scholars from other Universities and research institutes.
