The Collection was established in 1819 by Pietro Vittorio Aldini, the first professor of Archaeology, with a primarily educational purpose. It is therefore composed of various classes of materials spanning a broad chronological period, from protohistory to late antiquity, including an Egyptian section. Highlights include Etruscan votive terracottas, a collection of painted and figurative ceramics, a series of bronze statuettes and bronze ornaments, architectural elements and epigraphs, a rich numismatic collection, and sculptures, including the head of Aphrodite Sosandra. At the beginning of the 20th century, the collection was enriched with a collection of plaster casts (Gipsoteca), which includes approximately thirty casts of Greek sculptures.
The MULTI – Multimedia Museum of the Italian Language is a virtual museum designed to showcase the diverse intangible heritage of the history of the Italian language through an inclusive and interactive user experience, accessible also to non-specialists and non-Italian speakers.
Funded by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research, the project was developed by three research units—Università di Napoli “L’Orientale”, Università della Tuscia (Viterbo), and the University of Pavia (serving as coordinating institution)—in collaboration with the design studio Dotdotdot, which oversaw the creation of MULTI, from the development of its identity and user experience to the implementation of the platform.
